The coronavirus is a lethal virus that causes respiratory illnesses. It is transmitted through touch and that is why people are advised to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water or using sanitizers. It is necessary to wash your hands to prevent touching your face with contaminated hands because the virus gets through membraneous spaces like the nose, mouth, and eyes. Once infected, the victim exhibits symptoms as soon as 2 days and as long as 14 days.
SYMPTOMS OF CORONAVIRUS
- Dry cough
- Muscle ache
- Breathing difficulties
It can also affect other systems of the body especially when one is suffering from an illness. From the Lancet medical study journal published on January 24, we find the “cytokine storm” from persons with severe illnesses. A cytokine storm is a critical immune reaction whereby the body produces immune cells and proteins that could destroy other body organs.
BODY ORGANS AFFECTED BY COVID-19
Lungs are the main parts of the body affected by covid-19 as it is a respiratory disease. Here, some people have minute respiratory symptoms, while others have pneumonia but not life-threatening while others get extreme lung damage whereby, fluids leaks from the small blood cells of the lungs. This fluid collects in the alveoli making it hard for the lungs to transfer oxygen from the air to the blood. Patients who have had difficulty breathing later developed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome which has no particular treatment.
2. Stomach and Intestines
Some persons with coronavirus have had gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea. The study from the New England Journal of Medicine reported that stool samples of patients infected with covid-19 tested positive of the virus but they aren’t sure whether the virus can be transmitted through feces.
3. Heart and Blood Vessels
According to Evans, covid-19 could affect the heart and blood vessels seen through irregular heart rhythms, inadequate blood getting to the tissues and low blood pressure, necessary for one to seek medical attention.
4. Liver and Kidneys
When liver cells are damaged, they could cause a higher leak of enzymes than the normal amounts into the bloodstream. According to Dr. James from WHO, kidney damage occurred due to changes that took place during the coronavirus infection. He also said that when one had pneumonia, one had less oxygen circulate which as a result would damage kidneys.
5. Immune System
With any infection, the body’s immune system responds by attacking the foreign virus. The immune cells produce cytokines to fight the infection but if too many are produced, they could damage the body organs. A lot of body damaged is due to the sepsis syndrome which is a result of immune reactions. However, the infection itself could generate an intense inflammatory response that could affect the functioning of multiple body organs. Children are not affected by covid-19 as older people are.
